An excellently researched overview of Graphene Oxide in the food chain and side effects

GOFA NOTE: Graphene Oxide and its potential use in medicinal nanotechnology is well documented, although to date, there are no conclusions on its safety. In fact, studies* indicate that it should not be used for human or animal consumption. Whilst we do not disagree that Graphene Oxide could possibly have useful medical applications, our association is against this substance being administered without our consent or appearing in our food chain without our knowledge.

Graphene Nanoribbons: Prospects of Application in Biomedicine and Toxicity
https://www.mdpi.com/2079-4991/11/9/2425
Excerpt: but a number of researchers have revealed toxic effects, including cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Moreover, the damaging effects of nanoribbons are often higher than those of chemical analogs, for instance, graphene oxide nanoplates. The possible mechanism of toxicity is the ability of graphene nanoribbons to damage the cell membrane mechanically, stimulate reactive oxidative stress (ROS) production, autophagy, and inhibition of proliferation, as well as apoptosis induction, DNA fragmentation, and the formation of chromosomal aberrations.
Evaluation of Graphene Oxide Induced Cellular Toxicity and Transcriptome Analysis in Human Embryonic Kidney Cells
https://www.mdpi.com/2079-4991/9/7/969
Excerpt:This detailed mechanistic approach showed that graphene oxide exposure elicits significant decreases in mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP synthesis, as well as in DNA damage and caspase 3 activity. Furthermore, our RNA-Seq analysis revealed that HEK293 cells exposed to graphene oxide significantly altered the expression of genes involved in multiple apoptosis-related biological pathways. Moreover, graphene oxide exposure perturbed the expression of key transcription factors, promoting these apoptosis-related pathways by regulating their downstream genes. Our analysis provides mechanistic insights into how exposure to graphene oxide induces changes in cellular responses and massive cell death
